Actions 10/23/2019

FEDERAL:

Support the Shield Act:
H.R. 4617, the Stopping Harmful Interference in Elections for a Lasting Democracy (SHIELD) Act will close loopholes that allow foreign spending in our elections, boost disclosure and transparency requirements, and create a duty to report illicit offers of campaign assistance from foreign nations or governments. The SHIELD Act is a companion bill to the Senate’s Honest Ads Act and would go a long way toward shutting down the disinformation campaigns that continue to poison our public discourse. The bill is currently in committee, and Speaker Pelosi plans to bring it up for a vote within the next week. Let’s stand up for the requirement that our social media sites have at least some accountability when it comes to posting disinformation. Rep. G.K. Butterfield is a sponsor, so if he is your rep, skip the script below and just call his office to thank him for sponsoring this bill.

Hello, I am a constituent calling from ____________ to urge Rep. _______________ to support HR 4617, the SHIELD Act. This bill would take important steps toward eliminating foreignspending in our elections. It would close loopholes that currently allow foreign spending on our elections and would improve transparency when it comes to political advertisements. The bill would also prohibit the spread of deceptive information about voting procedures. We need to work to block disinformation about our elections, and the SHIELD Act is an important first step.

SENATE:

Condemn Trump’s Comparison of Himself to a Lynching Victim:
Trump’s barrage of Twitter spew today included a tweet in which he compared himself to a lynching victim. This comparison is an insult to the many thousands of black people who were tortured and killed solely because of their racial identity. While some people have treated this as a distraction, it’s still the case that this kind of racist discourse should not be tolerated. While you’re calling, you can also continue the drumbeat for impeachment...and if you are one of our South Carolina voters, feel free to unload on Lindsey Graham (R-Complicity).

Script:
Hello, I am a constituent calling to urge Sen. ______________ to condemn Trump’s description of himself as a “lynching victim.” This is an insult to the thousands of people who were lynched because of their racial or ethnic identity. He also showed a complete disregard for our Constitution by calling the Emoluments Clause “fake.” Trump’s comments and actions today are also yet another reminder that he has abused his power as President and should be impeached. Thank you.

STATE:

Restore Saturday Voting:
[From Democracy NC] In 2018, lawmakers passed Senate Bill 325, a law that, among other things, eliminated voting on the popular final Saturday before Election Day. Facing litigation, lawmakers restored the final Saturday for 2018 ONLY. But under current law North Carolinians will NOT be able to vote on the heavily-used last Saturday in 2020, when voters will need it most. Lawmakers are considering restoring Saturday for 2020 through Senate Bill 683 — which is being considered in a conference committee now. Take action now: Tell your lawmakers to do their job before session ends and restore Saturday Early Voting for 2020.

Action:
You can use the script below to call your state lawmakers or go to Democracy NC and use their website to automatically email your state senator here: https://org2.salsalabs.com/o/6601/p/dia/action4/common/public/?action_KEY=26790

Hello, I am a constituent calling from _____________ to urge Rep./Sen. __________ to support Senate Bill 683. This bill would allow people to vote early on the Saturday before Election Day for the 2020 election. Early voting is incredibly popular in North Carolina, especially on that final Saturday. We need to do everything we can to make voting as convenient and accessible as possible. Please support SB 683 and preserve voting on the final Saturday before the election.

Stop Making Teachers Pay for their own Subs:
When North Carolina teachers take a personal day, they are required to pay $50 for a substitute out of their own paychecks per day. Teachers in North Carolina are already severely underpaid, and while this may not seem like a huge amount, it can make a big difference when your budget is tight. It is also downright insulting. These kinds of petty policies are not good for teacher morale, and Governor Cooper is correct that this needs to stop.

Hello, I am a constituent from _________ calling to urge Rep/Sen. ____________ to require that the budget improve teacher pay and also to stop the ridiculous practice of requiring teachers to pay for their substitutes when they take a personal day. Our teachers are already underpaid, and making them pay for the subs is insulting. Let’s push for a budget that actually respects our teachers. Thank you.
