Friday Actions: Party at the Polls, Expand Medicaid, and More

****Actions 2/28/2020****

ELECTION CELEBRATION:

Party at the Polls:
Early voting for the March primaries wraps up on Saturday afternoon, so if you haven’t voted yet, you’re running out of time. But if you want to vote--and have fun with a few like-minded friends--the Raeigh-Apex NAACP is hosting a Party at the Polls event on Friday evening from 5-7 PM at Roberts Park. We’ll have music, food, and drinks, along with plenty of fun people who’ll be willing to help answer questions for new voters. Remember, during early voting, you can walk up, register, and then--boom--vote for all your favorite candidates. We’re expecting Party at the Polls to be a fun time with candidates and local activists mingling with first-time voters. If you have friends who aren’t registered, stop by, have a drink, and then take them to the polls.

Volunteer to Poll Greet or Canvas:
If you’re interested in helping the Democratic Party, you can volunteer to poll greet on election day. I’d also encourage you to poll greet or canvas for individual candidates if you have any that you like. This is especially important for down-ballot races where candidates have fewer resources. Here is the link to the Wake Democrats page, but I’d like to invite candidates and their surrogates to post volunteer opportunities in the comments. If you live in a different county, you can also post your links here.

Volunteer to Act as a Vote Protector:
Democracy NC is still recruiting volunteers to serve as Election Protectors. Their Election Protection program is just one more way Democracy North Carolina works to protect the rights of voters. In fact, vote protectors are the last line of defense. Our volunteers assist voters at polling places around the state, ensuring that every eligible voter can successfully cast a ballot. They also serve as the “eyes and ears on the ground”, sounding the alarm and documenting problems if they occur. Remember that as of right now, the voter ID law is indefinitely suspended. No one is required to show ID to vote in the primary.

FEDERAL:

Oppose Federal Medicaid Spending Caps:
[Adapted from 5 Calls] We are still waiting for North Carolina to expand Medicaid. Meanwhile, at the federal level, Trump is paying for his tax cuts for the wealthy by gutting programs that benefit the poor and disabled. On January 30, the Trump administration announced a new initiative to allow states to set limits on federal funding for Medicaid coverage for non-disabled adults. The federal government currently covers a set percentage of states’ Medicaid costs regardless of total spending. Under the new Trump policy, states could apply for a waiver to receive a limited amount of federal Medicaid funding based on how many nondisabled adults they cover. States that adopt the funding cap will be able to modify their Medicaid benefits to cover fewer prescription drugs and eliminate traditional Medicaid benefits, including long-term care and non-emergency medical transportation. The policy would also let states charge higher Medicaid copays.

The proposed capped funding structure has the potential to increase states’ administrative and cause Medicaid funding shortfalls during economic downturns. Healthcare advocates are concerned the plan could reduce Medicaid patients’ access to both clinical services and prescriptions]. Other critics have questioned whether the Trump administration has legal authority to impose federal spending caps without congressional approval.

Research has shown that Medicaid coverage saves lives and that lack of drug coverage prevents people from taking necessary medications. Urge your representatives oppose the Trump administration's push to impose Medicaid funding caps.

Tuesday Actions

****Actions 2/25/2020****

ELECTIONS:

I’m not going to use this space to endorse a specific candidate in any race, but I truly believe that it’s beneficial for all of us to be active, involved, and engaged. That includes doing things like canvassing, phone banking, text banking, or sending out postcards and giving voters positive reasons to support your chosen candidates. Being present--in a positive way--models good behavior and a belief in participatory politics. Show your fellow voters that their voice matters. After Super Tuesday, we’ll have a better understanding of who our candidates are (at least at the state level) and what we need to do to come together to ensure that our candidates win.

Reject Trump’s New DNI Chief:
Trump announced on Wednesday that he was replacing Joseph Maguire with a vocal loyalist, Richard Grenell, who is the U.S. ambassador to Germany. Maguire had recently warned the intelligence community that Putin wants Trump to win reelection and that Russia would be actively working to make that happen. This is yet another attempt to coverup possible criminal activity by replacing a career professional with an unqualified loyalist. The shake-up at the top of the intelligence community is the latest move in a post-impeachment purge. Trump has instructed aides to identify and remove officials across the government who aren’t defending his interests, and he wants them replaced with loyalists. It's time to take a stand and oppose Trump's continued attempts to eviscerate our intelligence community. Because Trump is appointing Grenell as an acting director, he is dodging the need to get Senate approval, but we can still demand that the Senate speak out against the appointment anyway.

Primary Voting:
Early voting for the March 3rd NC primary election is still happening, despite the cold weather. Let’s start this week off by taking some personal actions to maximize our electoral impact during this season. Early voting ends Saturday, February 29, so make sure you have a clear plan to vote so that your voice is heard.

Confirm your voter registration information, Election Day polling place, and view your sample ballot.
Link: https://vt.ncsbe.gov/PPLkup/

Review the one-stop, early voting sites and times.
Link: https://vt.ncsbe.gov/ossite/

Past research indicates that making a “voting plan” can increase turnout in an electorate by almost 4%. Take five minutes to: identify where you will vote; determine when you will vote (day/time); plan for how you will get to the polls; and select those (especially down-ballot) races on the ballot that you might have to research more before heading to the polls.

After researching the races for each elected office, is there a candidate that you feel passionate about supporting outside of giving them your vote? Search for more information about the candidate to see if you can: donate, canvass, poll greet, or make calls to other potential voters.

Identify at least 3 other individuals you know who should go through these five steps. This will help to ensure that we have an epic turnout during the primary and in the general election as well.

EVENTS:

Tuesdays with Tillis:
This week’s Tuesdays with Tillis focuses on our climate emergency. We need to support candidates who will do everything in their power to fight back against our looming climate crisis--and we need to remind Senator Tillis that he should take the climate crisis seriously.

As usual, Tuesdays with Tillis will be assembling at 11:30 AM in front of Tillis’s Raleigh office on New Bern Avenue.

Thursday Actions: Town Hall, Defund Bill Barr, and More

****Actions 2/20/2020****

Attend our Empty Chair Town Hall:
The weather outside looks frightful, but political participation is so delightful. We’re holding another empty chair town hall for Thom Tillis, and as you may know, several candidates, including Erica Smith, Cal Cunningham, Trevor Fuller, and Shannon Bray, have committed to attend.

These events rely on volunteers, and they wouldn’t be possible without the assistance of people like you. Volunteering can be a great way to get to know the candidates a little better, and if we haven’t met, this would also be a great way to get to know some of your fellow members. But if you can’t volunteer, just showing up and asking a question sends a loud message. We’re hoping to have some media presence at the event, so a full room will show everyone that we are ready to make Tillis #OneTermThom.

If you haven’t RSVPed for the town hall, we would encourage you to do so. We’d like to be able to show the news media that there will be a huge crowd of people ready to demonstrate that we want our voices to be heard.

This past weekend, a group of racist protesters gathered outside of the Chatham County Agricultural & Conference Center in Pittsboro. Please take a moment to reaffirm your commitment to anti-racism by emailing the Chatham County Sheriff.

Pressure the Senate to Extend the Deadline for the ERA (Equal Rights Amendment):
On Thursday of last week, the U.S. House passed H.J. Res. 79, which removed the deadline for ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). As a refresher, the ERA seeks to codify the belief that “equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the U.S. or by any state on account of sex.” There are different strategies for passing the ERA, but the extension of the deadline for passage would open up more options.

Thursday Actions: Election Security, William Barr, Town Halls, and More

****Actions 2/13/2020****

FEDERAL:

Hold Attorney General Barr Accountable for Interfering in Trump Investigations:
While MSNBC and CNN were distracted by undecided voters in New Hampshire, Attorney General Bill Barr was busy interfering with the sentencing of Trump surrogate Roger Stone. Prosecutors originally sought 7-9 years, and Barr has pushed to dramatically reduce that. This action prompted all four of the prosecutors involved in the case to withdraw, and one even resigned. Trump also enacted revenge by taking a job opportunity away from someone who had been involved in Stone’s trial. This is authoritarianism. It needs to stop. Our elected officials need to hold Trump and Barr accountable. At a minimum, Barr needs to be compelled to testify before Congress.

Hello, I am a constituent calling from zip code _______________ to urge Sen./Rep. ____________ to hold Trump and Attorney General Barr for interfering with the sentencing of Roger Stone. This is an authoritarian tactic that will make it impossible for Trump to be held accountable for any of his actions. Stone has been convicted of witness tampering and obstruction of justice on behalf of Trump. These are serious crimes, and not holding him accountable will further undermine the public’s faith in elections and the institutions meant to protect them. Barr cannot be trusted and should be compelled to resign immediately. Thank you.

Tell the Senate to Support the Shield Act:
We’re still waiting for the GOP to pay any attention to issues related to election security. Instead, they have spent the last few months shielding Trump, Rudy, and friends from any accountability when it comes to inviting foreign meddling in our elections. The House has passed several bills to address election security. One of those, The Shield Act, will close loopholes that allow foreign spending in our elections, boost disclosure and transparency requirements, and create a duty to report illicit offers of campaign assistance from foreign nations or governments. The SHIELD Act is comparable to Amy Klobuchar’s bill, The Honest Ads Act, and would go a long way toward shutting down the disinformation campaigns that continue to poison our public discourse.

ELECTIONS:

Elections have consequences. We’ve all seen that. And, although it’s beneath the radar, North Carolina is already gearing up for early voting. Here are a few simple things you can do to get involved.

Get Involved--then Brag About It:
The Wake County Democratic Party will be holding its precinct meetings on Saturday. Many of the meetings will be held at the McKimmon Center at NC State, but if you live in Wake County, check your location at the link below. For other counties, check your local Democratic Party home page. I’m going to encourage everyone to volunteer for at least one action and then to post their actions in the comments. Let’s use positive encouragement to help get our group members involved.

Volunteer for our Empty Chair Town Hall:
We’re holding another empty chair town hall for Thom Tillis, and as you may know, several candidates, including Erica Smith, Cal Cunningham, and Shannon Bray, have committed to attend. These events rely on volunteers, and they wouldn’t be possible without the assistance of people like you. Volunteering can be a great way to get to know the candidates a little better, and if we haven’t met, this would also be a great way to get to know some of your fellow members. The town hall is ONE WEEK away, so it would be really helpful to have a few more volunteers.

Poll Greeting:
If you live in Wake County, you can sign up here to do poll greeting at one of the early voting sites. Even during a primary, it is absolutely crucial to have a presence at the polls and to show that we are ready for 2020. Poll greeting is easy and fun. You’ll get an occasional snide comment, but hundreds of other people will be thankful that you’re there.

Primary Voting:
Early voting for the March 3rd NC primary election begins three days from today (i.e. on February 13th). Let’s start this week off by taking some personal actions to maximize our electoral impact during this season.

FEDERAL:

Muslim Ban script:
[Moms Rising] Donald Trump's de facto “Muslim Ban” executive order flies in the face of the American values we hold dear. It’s unlawful. It’s also hurting families, harming our economy, damaging our national security, and undermining the fundamental values of freedom of religion of our nation. That's why we urge you to co-sponsor and pass The National Origin-Based Antidiscrimination for Non-immigrants Act, S.1123 / H.R.2214 (“NO BAN Act”).

The No Ban Act will:
Repeal all versions of the Muslim ban, the refugee ban, and the asylum ban. If passed, the No Ban Act would immediately rescind each iteration of the Muslim ban, including one that specifically targets refugees for extreme vetting. It also would immediately rescind a ban targeting asylum-seekers arriving at the border.

Change immigration law to prohibit discrimination based on religion. The bill would broaden the Immigration and Nationality Act’s (INA’s) nondiscrimination clause to specifically prohibit religion-based discrimination against any immigrant or nonimmigrant visa applicant. This would help ensure that future presidents would not be allowed to issue orders based so clearly on anti-Muslim bias or any other religion-based animus and that every visa applicant would receive individual consideration.

Limit executive authority to prevent any president from issuing future bans like the Muslim ban. As the Muslim ban so clearly illustrates, the current legal standard for allowing a president to ban people from entering the U.S. is dangerously overbroad, with little to no accountability or oversight. The No Ban Act would change the INA standard for all presidents and impose stricter requirements before any future ban could be issued, as well as reporting requirements to Congress to create an oversight mechanism once any future ban is in place.

Call Script:
Hello, I am a constituent calling from zip code ________ to urge Rep./Sen. __________ to support S.1123 / H.R.2214, the No BAN Act. This bill would repeal all versions of the Muslim ban, the refugee ban, and the asylum ban. Our nation is founded on the freedom of religion. It is also a nation that has historically welcomed immigrants from a wide variety of nations. Let’s go back to living our ideals rather than falling prey to people’s fears. Support the No BAN Act. Thursday Calls: Immigration and Puerto Rico

****Actions 2/6/2020****

FEDERAL:

Demand the Immediate Release of Aid to Puerto Rico:
[From 5 Calls] Since mid-December 2019, hundreds of earthquakes have rocked the US territory of Puerto Rico, devastating infrastructure and leaving millions without power or safe shelter. The earthquakes are a cruel blow to an island still struggling to recover from two catastrophic and deadly hurricanes in 2017.

Puerto Rico’s slow recovery from the 2017 hurricanes is hardly a surprise given the US government’s ongoing failure to adequately fund disaster relief. While Congress allocated billions in disaster relief funding to Puerto Rico over a year ago, less than half of that money has actually been disbursed, and even less money has been actually spent. Now, the Trump administration has imposed further restrictions on distribution of aid to Puerto Rico. These restrictions, which include a ban on funding fixes to the island’s power grid and suspension of the $15 hourly wage for federal disaster relief work, further ensure Puerto Ricans will not receive the money they need to rebuild.

The Trump administration, consistent with its history of white supremacist policies, is callously ignoring thousands of United States citizens in Puerto Rico. Congress must advocate for immediate disbursement of disaster relief aid to Puerto Rico and oppose the Trump administration’s stringent limitations on aid distribution.

Script:
Hi, I'm a constituent calling from zip code ___________  to urge Rep./Sen. ___________ to oppose the stringent restrictions the Trump administration has applied to disaster relief funding for Puerto Rico. These restrictions ensure fellow Americans will not get the immediate help they need to recover after the series of devastating earthquakes that began in December. Trump's aid restrictions will only make it impossible for the island to fully recover. Thank you.

Demand that Congress Act to End Abuses of Migrant Detainees:
[From 5 Calls] Appalling stories continue to emerge about abuses of immigrants detained at the border. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is currently detaining over 53,000 immigrants in jails nationwide. The record-breaking spike in immigrant detention stems from a Trump administration policy to arrest nearly all undocumented immigrants. The draconian policy has led to dangerous overcrowding at ICE facilities, with one processing facility holding 900 people despite having a maximum capacity of 125. The explosion of detentions has also masked horrifying human rights abuses by immigration enforcement, including the unjustified separation of children from their families, confiscation of immigrants’ necessary medication, the abandonment of 37 children in a van in the Texas heat for 39 hours, and ongoing denial of necessary medical care to detainees—sometimes with deadly consequences. Meanwhile, an 800,000 case backlog in the overloaded, under-resourced immigration court system guarantees immigrants will languish in dangerous conditions for far too long.

Having directly manufactured this humanitarian crisis, the Trump administration continues to expand detention facilities and refuses accountability for ICE and Border Patrol’s abuses. Congress must demand an end to mass detention of all undocumented immigrants, and advocate for sufficient funding for the immigration court system to alleviate overcrowding. The Trump administration’s treatment of desperate immigrants seeking safety in the United States is a crime against humanity, and Congress must treat it as such.

Script:
Hi, my name is ____________ and I'm a constituent from zip code __________. I'm outraged by the reports of abuses of detained immigrants, from massive overcrowding to denial of basic sanitary supplies to children. I urge Rep./Sen. ________ to demand a robust investigation of immigration enforcement practices and detention conditions, and an end of the mass detention of all undocumented immigrants. Thank you.

Wednesday Actions: Oppose Tillis, Oppose Medicaid Cuts, Lower Drug Prices

****Actions 2/5/2020****

Editor’s Note: The impeachment vote is tomorrow. I think we all know how that’s going to go. We’ve already seen a Trump who knows that he will not face any consequences from the Senate for violating the law. If you want to make one last call to demand that Tillis and Burr vote to remove Trump from office, go for it, but I think it’s time to start thinking strategically about how we’re going to disrupt the Trump GOP cartel. With that in mind, I’m including a couple of scripts that speak directly to some of Trump’s lies during the SOTU address.

FEDERAL:

Remind the Senate about HR3:
We’re still waiting for a Senate vote on HR3. This bill would take some significant steps toward making prescription drugs more affordable. It would allow HHS to negotiate directly with drug companies for over 250 of the most expensive drugs. It would, for example, save diabetics up to $700 annually on insulin. In fact, at least one recent study has shown that 1 in 4 diabetics have been forced to ration insulin because of the cost. Manufacturers of drugs subject to negotiation would agree to a price no higher than 120 percent of the average price in other industrialized countries. Trump told Congress to put a bill on his desk that would lower prescription drug prices. Well, the Democratic House has already passed one.

Hello, I am a constituent caling from ____________ to urge Sen. ___________ to support HR3, the Elijah Cummings Lower Drug Costs Now Act. This bill would go a LONG way toward making prescription drugs more affordable. Diabetics, for example, would see the costs of insulin drop by $700 annually, which would be a life-changing cost savings for them. It would also bring our costs closer to the prices paid in every other industrialized nation. Please support HR3 and lower drug costs for millions of Americans. Thanks.

Prevent Medicaid Block Grants:
In his brutal SOTU address last night, Trump promised to protect access to healthcare. We know that’s a lie. He and the GOP are trying to gut the ACA and other programs that provide healthcare to everyday people. The Democratic House leadership quietly announced the introduction of a resolution of disapproval over the Trump administration’s proposed Medicaid block grant scheme, which would reduce or deny access to health care for millions of Americans. While “resolution of disapproval” sounds about as aggressive as a sternly worded letter, it could put every Republican in Congress on the record on cuts to health care, the very issue that won Democrats the 2018 midterm elections. Many of us still live in districts where GOP incumbents will be running again. It would also be useful to get Tillis to take a stand on whether he supports Medicaid block grants.

Script:
Hello, I am a constituent caling from ____________ to urge Rep./Sen ______________ to oppose Trump’s Medicaid block grant proposal. The House has introduced a “resolution of disapproval” against these Medicaid block grants. These block grants would actually take healthcare away from thousands of Americans who need it. It would make it harder for people to pay for prescription drugs, and it might even omit features like long-term care and transportation to medical appointments. This is incredibly cruel. Please oppose Trump’s Medicaid block grant program. Thank you.

Tuesday Actions: Reject the Coverup, Town Halls, Precinct Organizing and More

****Actions 2/4/2020****

EVENTS:

Tuesdays with Tillis:
This week’s theme for Tuesdays with Tillis is “Reject the Coverup.” Tillis has joined the Trump-GOP cartel in covering up Trump’s abuse of power and obstruction of justice. Several GOP Senators had the audacity to say that Trump did commit a crime but that he should not be punished for it. Tillis even voted against hearing witnesses who could have provided first-hand testimony. He needs to be held accountable. Join Tuesdays with Tillis and make some noise. As usual, Tuesdays with Tillis will be outside of Tillis’s Raleigh office on New Bern Avenue starting at 11:30.

When he was campaigning, Senator Tillis promised that he would hold town halls to meet with his voters and hear our concerns. He hasn’t done that. We’ve repeatedly invited him to our town halls. We’ve emailed, called, faxed and hand-delivered invitations. We’ve even considered a singing telegram. And yet, he never shows up. But ALL the other major candidates HAVE confirmed. Democrats Erica Smith and Cal Cunningham have stated they plan to be in attendance, along with Libertarian Shannon Bray.

While all questions are certainly welcome, the primary theme of this town hall will be healthcare. We’d like you to (1) sign up to attend and (2) come prepared with your questions about Tillis’s views on healthcare.

FEDERAL:

Impeachment:
The final vote on whether or not Trump will be removed from office is scheduled for Wednesday at 4 PM. It’s doubtful that Tillis and Burr will change their minds, but we can make them feel the pain of ignoring their constituents.

Script:
Hello, I am a constituent from zip code ____________ calling to urge Sen. ____________ to vote to remove Trump from office. He has clearly abused his power and sought to obstruct justice by blocking witnesses and documents. It's clear that he is willing to collude with a foreign power to influence the outcome of the 2020 elections. You need to stand up for democracy and protecting our elections. Trump needs to be removed from office. Thank you.

Stop Trump from Expanding Muslim Ban:
[From Muslim Advocates] Meanwhile, Trump publicly confirmed that his administration is working on an expansion of the Muslim Ban. Monday, January 27th is the third anniversary of the first Executive Order implementing the ban. AP, BuzzFeed, CNN and other media outlets have reported that the White House could announce a dramatic expansion of the ban on or around that date. The following is a statement from Muslim Advocates Executive Director Farhana Khera:

“President Trump’s plan to expand the Muslim Ban is a cowardly and reckless attempt to distract the country and sow anti-Muslim hate. The Muslim Ban was wrong in 2017 and it is wrong now.

Tens of thousands of American families are already hurting and separated because of this bigoted and cruel ban. Doubling down on it won’t make any of us safer but it will allow the president to continue using anti-Muslim hate as a political weapon.

Congress must stand up to this naked and cynical bigotry by immediately passing the NO BAN Act, a historic civil rights bill that would end this ban and all religious and nationality bans. The Muslim Ban is a grave insult to our nation’s founding commitments to religious freedom and equal treatment under the law. Congress must do everything possible to end this cruelty right now.”

The list of countries is not yet final and could be changed, but nations under consideration for new restrictions include Belarus, Myanmar (also known as Burma), Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Nigeria, Sudan and Tanzania.

Script:
Hello, I am a constituent from ____________ calling to urge Rep./Sen. ____________ to support the NO BAN bill. I am concerned that Trump is planning to expand his Muslim ban to include several new countries. This is bigotry, pure and simple, and doubling down on hate will only serve to break up families and hurt our reputation abroad. It is also a violation of our first amendment protections of religious freedom. Please support the NO BAN bill and stand up to Trump’s attempts to expand the Muslim ban.
