Actions 10/24/2019

ELECTIONS:

Get Involved in Swing Left:
The primaries are still a few months away (although they are approaching VERY quickly), and many of us may not have decided on which candidates to support. BUT we all want to beat Trump and the GOP at every level. Swing Left can help us do that. Swing Left sees North Carolina as a “Super State.” We are a swing state for the Electoral College, our Senate race is competitive, we have competitive House races, and our state legislature will be redrawing districts in 2020. NC2 is looking especially competitive. Sleepy George Holding has received just ONE donation from a constituent in the last quarter. ONE. Let me say that again. George Holding only has one constituent who thinks his campaign is worth supporting financially. So, we have that going for us. Which is nice.

You can donate to Swing Left’s Flippable States Fund, donate to their Presidential fund, or volunteer for canvases and other opportunities. Swing Left is awesome and they have quietly supported our group, including promoting our town halls. Go here to get involved: https://swingleft.org/

Municipal Elections:
Garner, Morrisville, Fuquay-Varina, and Morrisville have municipal elections coming up soon. There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer. You can go to Wake Dems’ Facebook page to get involved. But if others have links to canvassing opportunities, please suggest them here: https://www.facebook.com/WakeDems

FEDERAL:

Tell the Senate to Support the Shield Act:
As expected the Democratic House passed the Shield Act today, legislation that would go a long way toward securing our elections from misinformation. While this was happening, a bunch of Republicans were playing revolutionary by storming into a closed meeting illegally armed with electronics. Now it’s the Senate’s turn. Just a reminder that the Shield Act will close loopholes that allow foreign spending in our elections, boost disclosure and transparency requirements, and create a duty to report illicit offers of campaign assistance from foreign nations or governments. The SHIELD Act is a companion bill to the Senate’s Honest Ads Act and would go a long way toward shutting down the disinformation campaigns that continue to poison our public discourse.

Hello, I am a constituent calling from ____________ to urge Rep. _______________ to support The SHIELD Act. This bill would take important steps toward eliminating foreignspending in our elections. It would close loopholes that currently allow foreign spending on our elections and would improve transparency when it comes to political advertisements. The bill would also prohibit the spread of deceptive information about voting procedures. We need to work to block disinformation about our elections, and the SHIELD Act is an important first step.

Impeach Trump:
We need to keep the pressure on about impeachment. Tillis and Burr both need to know that we will not tolerate the kind of corruption that Trump and his GOP cronies have displayed in their efforts to undermine a political opponent.

Hello, I am a constituent from ______________ calling to urge Rep./Sen. _____________ to support the impeachment of Donald Trump. It is becoming increasingly clear that his abuses of power qualify as impeachable offenses. We need to restore the rule of law and Trump has consistently violated the law and is quickly destroying whatever credibility our nation has on the global stage. It’s time to take your oversight responsibility seriously and to support impeachment.

Fight for Fair Maps:
The fight for Fair Maps continues. There will be meeting at 9am in room 643LOB at 300 N Salisbury St Raleigh. You can also listen in here: https://www.ncleg.gov/Audio

If  you can’t attend in person, call on your lawmakers to support SB 673, which would be the most far-reaching bill to limit gerrymandering in the future.

Hello, I am a constituent calling from ___________ to urge Rep./Sen. ____________ to support SB 673, which would put a constitutional amendment on the 2020 ballot that would help to prevent lawmakers from gerrymandering districts. Voters should choose their lawmakers, not the other way around, and SB 673 is the best way of giving voters a voice. Thank you.
