Monday Actions: Heroes Act, School Nurses, Phone Banking, and More

FEDERAL:

Support The Heroes Act:
House Democrats have introduced the Heroes Act, a bill that would combine protections to stop the spread of the coronavirus with an economic stimulus targeted towards working families. As we all know, the first stimulus dumped billions to massive corporations and left many working families without sufficient assistance. This bill would provide: $1T for state & local government, $200B in hazard pay for essential workers, $75B for testing & contact tracing, up to $6K per family in direct payments. A vote is scheduled for Friday in the House, where I expect it will pass, so go ahead and call both the House and Senate on this one.

Hello, I am a constituent from zip code ___________ calling to urge Rep./Sen. ___________ to support the Heroes Act. This bill would go a long way toward helping working families by providing them with direct stimulus payments and would also invest heavily in testing and contact tracing. We need to do everything we can to contain the pandemic and to ensure that people are able to pay their bills. Thank you.

Demand that the NCGA Fund School Nurses for EVERY Public School in the State:
[From Andrea Biondi] Do you think every school in NC should have a full time nurse in the Fall? Currently school nurses cover anywhere from 1-5 schools leaving teachers and admins to tend to sick kids and deal with medications.  Berger (R) and Moore (R) and leaders of the NC Ed committee have rejected this idea.

How strongly do you feel about having a nurse at every school?  Strong enough to write an email or make a call?  Our kids' health will be at risk if they go back to school.  Having medical personnel on every campus is essential.

These are the members of the NCGA House and Senate Education committees if anyone wants to call them and tell them we want a school nurse at every school in the Fall:

Volunteer to Phone Bank for Sydney:
Sydney’s Campaign Manager, Shaun Ballman, is in the process of compiling volunteers to phone bank. If you’d like, you can reach out to him via email (shaunballman@gmail.com) or just comment below, and I can connect you. You can also join the outstanding group at Neighbors on Call. They’ve already made TONS of phone calls on Sydney’s behalf.

If you can recommend other phone banking opportunities, please post them here.

Volunteer from Home for the North Carolina Democratic Party:
The North Carolina Democratic Party has created a number of volunteer opportunities, including phone bank training so that you can make calls on behalf of candidates. Remember that North Carolina is a superstate and that elections here will not only impact the Presidency and the balance of the Senate but will also affect how our districts are drawn for the next decade.

Petition to Protect North Carolina Meat and Poultry Processing Workers:
[From the NC Justice Center] With more than 800 confirmed cases of COVID-19 at North Carolina meat and poultry processing plants and outbreaks in at least 19 plants, it is urgent that North Carolina’s leaders act swiftly to protect the thousands of workers at these plants who call North Carolina home. The conditions in NC’s poultry and meat processing plants exacerbate the risks of workers contracting COVID-19: close proximity on the production line and in break rooms, cold and humidity, infrequent breaks, and lack of access to PPE. Most workers do not have paid sick time or adequate healthcare, most do not have health insurance, and after years earning low wages, they have little reserves to enable them to leave steady employment. This petition calls for paid leave, job protections, and premium pay to help protect front line workers.

EVENTS:

Indivisible TDCA Town Hall with Cal Cunningham:
Indivisible Triangle Daily Call to Action will be hosting a special Zoom Town Hall with Senate candidate Cal Cunningham. This will be YOUR opportunity to talk to Cal about the policies and issues that are most important to you. I’ve attended several of these, and I can assure you that Cal is incredibly approachable and listens carefully to your questions and comments....unlike a certain Senator running for re-election.
