ELECTIONS 2020:
Get Involved in a Campaign:
The North Carolina primaries are over, and with a few exceptions, we know who our candidates are. Obviously the Presidential primary is over, and there are a couple of statewide races that still haven’t been called, BUT we do know that we need to work towards winning some elections. Swing Left has called North Carolina a “super state” because we not only are a swing state for the Presidency but we also have Governor and Senate races, at least two competitive House races, and a state legislature to flip. For now, I’m going to start tracking a few ways that you can get involved in a local race. Remember that one of the most powerful things you can do going forward is to phone bank or canvas for a candidate or two of your choice. I’d also encourage you to get involved in voter registration efforts, if that’s your preference.
Swing Left:
Swing Left has highlighted eight state senate races and twenty state house races that will be absolutely crucial in lipping at least one chamber of the NCGA. Remember that Congressional and state legislative districts will be redrawn after the 2020 elections, and we will have to live with those districts for another decade. Another ten years of GOP rule will put us further behind when it comes to climate change, women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, education, and so many other issues. Here is a link to Swing Left’s NC page where you can get involved: https://swingleft.org/p/north-carolina
----------
Flip NC:
Flip NC played a huge role in helping to break the GOP supermajorities. They canvassed relentlessly in several key races, including my house and senate districts, where Sydney Batch and Sam Searcy flipped previously GOP seats. They just launched their 2020 campaign, and they are ready to do some heavy-duty canvassing this year: https://flipnc.org/
------------
Stamp NC Blue:
Stamp NC Blue is an all-purpose activist group that focuses largely on sending out postcards to voters to encourage them to vote blue in the upcoming elections. If door-to-door canvassing isn’t your thing, then sending out postcards is another way you can contribute: https://www.stampncblue.org/
------------
Here is your weekly activism calendar courtesy of NC Wins:
http://ncwins.org/events/
Note: If you have events, please share them on the NC Wins website.
-----------
Individual Races:
I’m also including links to a few candidate pages in competitive races so that you can get involved directly with a campaign. This is one of the best ways to get involved because campaigns are often more acutely aware of where and how your time will help the most.

Please list other groups and campaigns in the comments!! We'll return to phone scripts soon, but I think it's worth emphasizing the urgency of getting involved in these elections.

Tell the Senate to Support the Shield Act:
We’re still waiting for the GOP to pay any attention to issues related to election security. Instead, they have spent the last few months shielding Trump, Rudy, and friends from any accountability when it comes to inviting foreign meddling in our elections. The House has passed several bills to address election security. One of those, The Shield Act, will close loopholes that allow foreign spending in our elections, boost disclosure and transparency requirements, and create a duty to report illicit offers of campaign assistance from foreign nations or governments. The SHIELD Act is comparable to Amy Klobuchar’s bill, The Honest Ads Act, and would go a long way toward shutting down the disinformation campaigns that continue to poison our public discourse.

Hello, I am a constituent calling from ____________ to urge Rep. _______________ to support The SHIELD Act. This bill would take important steps toward eliminating foreignspending in our elections. It would close loopholes that currently allow foreign spending on our elections and would improve transparency when it comes to political advertisements. The bill would also prohibit the spread of deceptive information about voting procedures. We need to work to block disinformation about our elections, and the SHIELD Act is an important first step.

Friday Actions: Party at the Polls, Expand Medicaid, and More
****Actions 2/28/2020****
ELECTION CELEBRATION:
Party at the Polls:
Early voting for the March primaries wraps up on Saturday afternoon, so if you haven’t voted yet, you’re running out of time. But if you want to vote--and have fun with a few like-minded friends--the Raeigh-Apex NAACP is hosting a Party at the Polls event on Friday evening from 5-7 PM at Roberts Park. We’ll have music, food, and drinks, along with plenty of fun people who’ll be willing to help answer questions for new voters. Remember, during early voting, you can walk up, register, and then--boom--vote for all your favorite candidates. We’re expecting Party at the Polls to be a fun time with candidates and local activists mingling with first-time voters. If you have friends who aren’t registered, stop by, have a drink, and then take them to the polls.

Volunteer to Poll Greet or Canvas:
If you’re interested in helping the Democratic Party, you can volunteer to poll greet on election day. I’d also encourage you to poll greet or canvas for individual candidates if you have any that you like. This is especially important for down-ballot races where candidates have fewer resources. Here is the link to the Wake Democrats page, but I’d like to invite candidates and their surrogates to post volunteer opportunities in the comments. If you live in a different county, you can also post your links here.

Volunteer to Act as a Vote Protector:
Democracy NC is still recruiting volunteers to serve as Election Protectors. Their Election Protection program is just one more way Democracy North Carolina works to protect the rights of voters. In fact, vote protectors are the last line of defense. Our volunteers assist voters at polling places around the state, ensuring that every eligible voter can successfully cast a ballot. They also serve as the “eyes and ears on the ground”, sounding the alarm and documenting problems if they occur. Remember that as of right now, the voter ID law is indefinitely suspended. No one is required to show ID to vote in the primary.

Oppose Federal Medicaid Spending Caps:
[Adapted from 5 Calls] We are still waiting for North Carolina to expand Medicaid. Meanwhile, at the federal level, Trump is paying for his tax cuts for the wealthy by gutting programs that benefit the poor and disabled. On January 30, the Trump administration announced a new initiative to allow states to set limits on federal funding for Medicaid coverage for non-disabled adults. The federal government currently covers a set percentage of states’ Medicaid costs regardless of total spending. Under the new Trump policy, states could apply for a waiver to receive a limited amount of federal Medicaid funding based on how many nondisabled adults they cover. States that adopt the funding cap will be able to modify their Medicaid benefits to cover fewer prescription drugs and eliminate traditional Medicaid benefits, including long-term care and non-emergency medical transportation. The policy would also let states charge higher Medicaid copays.
The proposed capped funding structure has the potential to increase states’ administrative and cause Medicaid funding shortfalls during economic downturns. Healthcare advocates are concerned the plan could reduce Medicaid patients’ access to both clinical services and prescriptions]. Other critics have questioned whether the Trump administration has legal authority to impose federal spending caps without congressional approval.
Research has shown that Medicaid coverage saves lives and that lack of drug coverage prevents people from taking necessary medications. Urge your representatives oppose the Trump administration's push to impose Medicaid funding caps.

ELECTIONS:
I’m not going to use this space to endorse a specific candidate in any race, but I truly believe that it’s beneficial for all of us to be active, involved, and engaged. That includes doing things like canvassing, phone banking, text banking, or sending out postcards and giving voters positive reasons to support your chosen candidates. Being present--in a positive way--models good behavior and a belief in participatory politics. Show your fellow voters that their voice matters. After Super Tuesday, we’ll have a better understanding of who our candidates are (at least at the state level) and what we need to do to come together to ensure that our candidates win.

Reject Trump’s New DNI Chief:
Trump announced on Wednesday that he was replacing Joseph Maguire with a vocal loyalist, Richard Grenell, who is the U.S. ambassador to Germany. Maguire had recently warned the intelligence community that Putin wants Trump to win reelection and that Russia would be actively working to make that happen. This is yet another attempt to coverup possible criminal activity by replacing a career professional with an unqualified loyalist. The shake-up at the top of the intelligence community is the latest move in a post-impeachment purge. Trump has instructed aides to identify and remove officials across the government who aren’t defending his interests, and he wants them replaced with loyalists. It's time to take a stand and oppose Trump's continued attempts to eviscerate our intelligence community. Because Trump is appointing Grenell as an acting director, he is dodging the need to get Senate approval, but we can still demand that the Senate speak out against the appointment anyway.

Primary Voting:
Early voting for the March 3rd NC primary election is still happening, despite the cold weather. Let’s start this week off by taking some personal actions to maximize our electoral impact during this season. Early voting ends Saturday, February 29, so make sure you have a clear plan to vote so that your voice is heard.
Confirm your voter registration information, Election Day polling place, and view your sample ballot.
Link: https://vt.ncsbe.gov/PPLkup/
Review the one-stop, early voting sites and times.
Link: https://vt.ncsbe.gov/ossite/
Past research indicates that making a “voting plan” can increase turnout in an electorate by almost 4%. Take five minutes to: identify where you will vote; determine when you will vote (day/time); plan for how you will get to the polls; and select those (especially down-ballot) races on the ballot that you might have to research more before heading to the polls.
After researching the races for each elected office, is there a candidate that you feel passionate about supporting outside of giving them your vote? Search for more information about the candidate to see if you can: donate, canvass, poll greet, or make calls to other potential voters.
Identify at least 3 other individuals you know who should go through these five steps. This will help to ensure that we have an epic turnout during the primary and in the general election as well.
EVENTS:
Tuesdays with Tillis:
This week’s Tuesdays with Tillis focuses on our climate emergency. We need to support candidates who will do everything in their power to fight back against our looming climate crisis--and we need to remind Senator Tillis that he should take the climate crisis seriously.
As usual, Tuesdays with Tillis will be assembling at 11:30 AM in front of Tillis’s Raleigh office on New Bern Avenue.

Friday Actions: Russia Again, Stop William Barr, and More
****Actions 2/21/2010****
FEDERAL:
Defund William Barr:
[Adapted from Indivisible National] Despite appearances, William Barr is not going to resign. Republicans won’t impeach him. Trump obviously is not going to fire him. But we can find ways to make it more difficult for Barr to play the role of Trump’s personal lawyer. Demand your Representative defund Attorney General Bill Barr. The Attorney General of the United States himself, William Barr, personally intervened to try to score a lighter sentence for Roger Stone, the deeply corrupt former campaign adviser to Donald Trump. The Department of Justice is not a private law firm. The Attorney General is not the president’s personal lawyer. Yet Bill Barr is exploiting his position to run favors for the president. Call your representative, Democrat or Republican, and demand that Congress investigate Bill Barr and defund his office until he recuses himself from any Trump-related investigations or prosecutions.

Hello, I am a constituent from zip code __________ calling to urge Sen./Rep. _________ to investigate Attorney General William Barr and to support defunding his office until he recuses himself from any Trump-related investigations. Barr has shown that he is more interested in acting as Trump’s personal attorney than he is in upholding the law. Barr has repeatedly abused his power on behalf of Trump, and that needs to stop. Thank you.

Hello, I am a constituent from zip code __________ calling to urge Sen. _________ to reject Trump’s appointment of Richard Grenell to be the Director of National Intelligence. Grenell is not qualified to hold this position. I’m also concerned that Trump only appointed him because he is punishing the current DNI, Joseph Maguire, who has warned the public that Russia again plans to interfere in a U.S. election on behalf of Trump. It is absolutely alarming that Russia is planning to interfere with our elections. We need to do everythig we can to protect our democratic institutions.

Thursday Actions: Town Hall, Defund Bill Barr, and More
****Actions 2/20/2020****
Attend our Empty Chair Town Hall:
The weather outside looks frightful, but political participation is so delightful. We’re holding another empty chair town hall for Thom Tillis, and as you may know, several candidates, including Erica Smith, Cal Cunningham, Trevor Fuller, and Shannon Bray, have committed to attend.
These events rely on volunteers, and they wouldn’t be possible without the assistance of people like you. Volunteering can be a great way to get to know the candidates a little better, and if we haven’t met, this would also be a great way to get to know some of your fellow members. But if you can’t volunteer, just showing up and asking a question sends a loud message. We’re hoping to have some media presence at the event, so a full room will show everyone that we are ready to make Tillis #OneTermThom.
Sign-Up Genius:

If you haven’t RSVPed for the town hall, we would encourage you to do so. We’d like to be able to show the news media that there will be a huge crowd of people ready to demonstrate that we want our voices to be heard.

Stand against racism and voter intimidation:
This past weekend, a group of racist protesters gathered outside of the Chatham County Agricultural & Conference Center in Pittsboro. This group sought to assert itself by: waving Confederate flags, yelling “Trump 2020”, and shouting racial slurs. Not only was their racism disruptive to an event that sought to unpack the symbolism of Confederate monuments, it was also at a polling place, which raises concerns of voter intimidation. Please take a moment to reaffirm your commitment to anti-racism by emailing the Chatham County Sheriff.

Hello, as you are likely aware, a group of protesters gathered outside the Chatham County Agricultural & Conference Center this past weekend. Using racial slurs and Confederate flags, this group created an unsafe atmosphere for participants inside the Conference Center and those wishing to vote at this polling place. Please reaffirm your commitment to creating a Chatham County grounded in safety and inclusion, and additionally, please denounce the racist actions taken by groups such as this one. Thank you for your time.
