Congressional Districts are Set:
A state court ruled today that the redrawn Congressional districts can be used for the 2020 elections. This likely means that Democrats will gain two seats (which is great!) but that North Carolina is unlikely to have many competitive Congressional races (which is bad). Still, it’s worth getting involved in a Congressional campaign. We can’t take ANY races for granted in 2020, especially with so many things at stake. Here are the details on today’s ruling.

Call Out Senator Burr’s Inane Defense of Trump:
Senator Burr, Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, is playing semantic games to defend Trump and the completely discredited conspiracy theory that Ukraine interfered in the 2016 election. Burr is trying to create confusion around the word meddling by creating a false equivalence between Ukraine’s leaders’ expressed preference for Hillary Clinton and Russia’s sustained, systemic attempt to undermine our election. Burr knows this is false, but he is pushing this lie anyway. Let’s call him out and make him answer for lying to his constituents.

Call Out Senator Tillis’s Inane Defense of Trump:
You might be sensing a theme here. Like Burr, Senator Tillis has been out there defending the Trump administration. Today, Tillis repeated the lie that Democrats are so focused on impeaching Trump that they have not passed any meaningful legislation. Of course, we know that our Democratic House has passed over 400 bills that are sitting on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s desk waiting for a vote. Tillis’s lie is doubly bad because he is claiming that House Democrats are the only thing standing in the way of passing the USMCA (the “new” NAFTA). This is actually false because Canada’s passage of the bill has expired and needs to be renewed. Tillis is breathing a sigh of relief because his GOP primary challenger dropped out. Let’s see if he uses this as an opportunity to reach across the aisle and appeal to moderate voters.

Expose Fake Clinics:
[Action courtesy of NARAL Pro-Choice NC] Anti-abortion fake clinics outnumber real abortion clinics by more than 7 to 1 in North Carolina. The goal of these fake clinics has never been to meet actual healthcare needs, but to coerce, deceive, and intimidate people out of accessing abortions and to block people from accessing actual medically accurate and comprehensive reproductive health care.
In a state that STILL has not expanded Medicaid, the NC General Assembly has budgeted $2.64 million in state healthcare funds to these fake clinics. With hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians lacking access to basic healthcare, this diversion of funds exploits vulnerable people for the sole purpose of spreading anti-abortion messages.

Call out the UNC BOG for Handing Off $2.5 Million to the Sons of Confederate Veterans:
The UNC Board of Governors, appointed by the NCGA without any input from the Governor, has decided to “settle” a “lawsuit” (one that may never have actually existed) by handing over $2.5 million to a pro-Confederacy group to take custody of Silent Sam.
